ArtsVote is collecting photos of artists / arts workers / arts supporters for a promo slideshare! Ttake your picture holding a sign with the phrase “I am an artist, I vote” (customize if you are an arts worker, and arts supporter, or all three!)  – be as creative as you want!  If you’re sending a picture be sure you title the file with your name – and try not to kill our servers – jpgs under 300 Kb please.  Email to info(at)artsvotetoronto.ca or post on our Facebook page.

G&M: Smitherman sees tax hike as way to fix high youth unemployment

As mayor, George Smitherman says he would encourage youth employment by charging businesses to create a $10-million fund subsidizing companies that hire young people.

He would also oblige firms doing business with the city – including transit, Toronto Hydro and the police service – to hire youth.

Star:Rob Ford would be a disaster as Toronto mayor

Rob Ford loves to portray himself as the champion of the little guy, a lone wolf fighting on behalf of taxpayers fed up with waste and incompetence at city hall.

It’s a role Ford has honed to perfection during his 10 years as a Toronto City Councillor.

Now, the combative councillor from Etobicoke North is taking his act out across the city as he mounts a full-scale campaign to become the city’s next mayor.

EYE: Understanding “suburban fury”

If Toronto mayoral frontrunner Rob Ford is tapping into “suburban fury,” his opponents need to better understand this phenomenon in order to close the apparently ever-widening gap. Thankfully, a Canadian-based think-tank called Arcade Fire has been studying the suburbs, and recently released their findings in a 65-minute audio-visual presentation entitled The Suburbs.

When Rocco Rossi entered the race for mayor all those moons ago, many asked, “Rocco who?”

Indeed, outside backroom political circles, both Tory and Liberal, Rossi was an unknown.

Eight months into the longest mayoral race in living memory, Rossi continues to be a huge question mark for voters, tracking in the single digits in public opinion polls despite some high-priced help and a slick, tech-savvy campaign.
